Bass Fishing Season Runs from January - September
While they run like a sport, the IHSA has put competitive Bass Fishing in the activities category for a specific reason. They started this 11 years ago when the majority of schools were in a big budget crunch, and by having fewer parameters it allowed bass fishing to grow at a rapid pace because it allowed schools to run the program that best fit each school's needs. The first year 199 schools had teams and today its well over 300. With no defined season, teams around the state operate under their own parameters and nearly all year long. At MHS, practices and competitions are coordinated January - September.
Practices - 36 practices 1.5 - 8 hours each (held at MHS, TPC Deere Run, Riverstone Quarry)
Jan-mid-March - 2 days a week after school and/or Saturdays (16 practices - 1.5 - 2 hours each)
March - May - 2-3 days a week (16-20 practices - average 4 hours each)
June - July - 1 day a week (8 hours)
Events - 16 full and half day events
Based upon weather and availability. Typically, MHS bass team averages 16 full and half day events. This is an average and includes presectional Spring events such as the Riverdale Pool 14 and Newton Lake Invite, the Illinois High School Federation state qualifying event in Springfield, and the two Harvester High School and adult division spring tournaments. The IHSA sectional (two full days in Savannah, IL) is the first week of May followed by the IHSA State tournament 2 weeks later (4 full days in Carlyle, IL). The state event also includes 3 days the week before. During May-June-July-August the team fishes the Harvester High school summer series. Eight 4-hour events and one 10 hour event.
